Today was highlighted by a ferry trip to Bainbridge Island. Our friends Su and Stu’s garden was slated for the Bainbridge Island Garden Tour. Su is a master gardener and they have been working years to get their garden just right.
On the ferry we reminisced about when Louise’s god-parents had a house on the bluff overlooking the bay; we could watch the ferries come and go. Not only did we love visiting Carolyn and Alan but one summer we house sat. We had the view and the silence all to ourselves; we are saddened that those are yesterday’s memories.
When I first came to Seattle and had no money on Sunday’s I’d buy a newspaper and ride the ferry to either Bainbridge Island or Bremerton. I loved those Sunday outings. There are no ferries in Kansas. The Cascades and Olympics are outstanding not only in the sun but even through the clouds and rain.
We were greeted at the reception garage by Su’s daughter and granddaughter, Kate. The small redheaded six-year old was delighted to explain the garden map and gleefully directed to the path to get started on the tour. Although we meet a couple of times a year for dinner, it had been several years since we had been to their home and we were quite impressed with how they had filled the acre of land with paths; various blooming plants; trees; large evergreens; a captivating pond with running water and fish; a fenced raised bed vegetable garden; and small pasture for two Cashmere goats. It was nice to see Su and Stu with wide grins highlighting their hard work.
We topped off our island visit with an early dinner at the “Pub”, Harbour Public House, and a short walk through town to browse the open Bainbridge Island shops.
We were quiet as sailed back satiated..
